Butler symphony offers 'Wild, Wild West' theme for concert
The Butler County Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Elisabeth Heath-Charles, will head west for its annual family concert on Nov. 6.
This year's performance, entitled "Wild, Wild West," will feature fiddler Ken Metrick and the Dukettes Dance Team. Jeanne Potter will serve as mistress of ceremonies, otherwise called the head wrangler, in keeping with the western theme.
Metrick will demonstrate unaccompanied fiddling. However, his fiddling is not quite the same style as playing violin with the orchestra.
He began to fiddle when he was 10 or 12 years old. He has had no lessons, just a good ear.
In addition to playing fiddle, Metrick plays guitar, which he has been doing since he was 4 or 5 years old. He has had some guitar lessons and remembers, as a child, listening to guitar playing on the Grand Ole Opry.
He plays in bands and on his own. He has made five solo recordings of gospel music.
The Dukettes Dance Team from Duquesne University will dance to the music of Aaron Copland's "Buckaroo Holiday" from the ballet "Rodeo."
Audience participation is invited. Anyone interested in participating with the Dukettes should call the symphony office.
The audience also will be invited to sing along when the orchestra plays "Oklahoma."
Other music will be by John Williams, Leroy Anderson and Alfred Newman.
The concert is made possible through the Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts, a program of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.
