Inmate sneaks in drug bag

Authorities for the second time this month arrested a Butler County Prison inmate for possessing marijuana in the jail.

Charles Blatt, 21, of Center Township was charged

Tuesday

with possession of contraband by an inmate, said county Detective Pat Cannon.

Blatt, who was to be arraigned this morning before District Judge Pete Shaffer, is accused of bringing in a small amount of marijuana to the prison where state police took him Thursday for a probation violation.

Prison officials, acting on a tip, later that day found Blatt with the suspected dope.

The defendant admitted he had secreted the marijuana, contained in a baggie, by placing it in his rectum following his arrest, Cannon said.

Anthony Hoskinson, 32, of Butler was charged last week for possession of a small amount of marijuana in the prison.

Hoskinson allegedly carried the pot inside the jail May 10 after Butler Township police arrested him for drunken driving and resisting arrest. Prison officials caught Hoskinson with the pot in his shoe, authorities said.

Cannon said the defendant admitted he had managed to bring the drug into the prison undetected, following his earlier arrest, by hiding it in a sock.

"This is a serious charge; it's a (second-degree) felony and we take it seriously," said Cannon of the marijuana possession charges faced by the two inmates.

Second-degree felonies carry up to $25,000 in fines and could lead to 10 years in prison, under state law.
