Ex-Sarver man kills woman, self

Police find bodies in Indiana, Pa., home

INDIANA, Pa. — A former Sarver man murdered a woman, then killed himself inside his borough apartment.

Police discovered the bodies of Mark McWilliams, 53, and Bridget Vargo, 56, on Monday, but they are saying little about the murder-suicide.

Each person died of a single gunshot wound to the front of the head, but the Indiana County Coroner's office has ruled Vargo's death a homicide and McWilliams' a suicide.

State police began their investigation after receiving reports that Vargo, who lived in White Township, had not been seen in days.

Police reportedly found Vargo, McWilliams and a .38-caliber revolver, believed to be the murder weapon, in the bedroom of McWilliams' Maple Street apartment, according to police.

Preliminary findings of the autopsies done Tuesday conclude McWilliams shot Vargo and then himself.

A written statement by chief deputy coroner Michael Baker said the determination was based on the position of the bodies, the location of the gun, and "the nature of Ms. Vargo's head wound." Toxicology test results are pending.

The coroner's office is declining further comment.

State police referred all questions to borough police, who declined further comment.

Little information was available Wednesday about Vargo, McWilliams or their relationship.

Court documents indicate McWilliams lived in Butler County as recently as 1996.

Funeral arrangements for McWilliams are being handled by the Fox Funeral Home in Saxonburg.

Funeral arrangements for Vargo, a mother of two sons, are being prepared by the C. Frederick Bowser Funeral Home in Homer City.
