Butler wrestlers sweep Commodore Perry duals

Rob Runyan (103) and Josh Coburn (152) each won five matches to spearhead the Butler wrestling team's effort at the Commodore Perry Wrestling Duals Saturday.

The Tornado won in all five rounds, defeating Laurel 72-6, Titusville 43-30, Commodore Perry 52-20, Port Allegany 37-32 and Brookville 61-16.

"We dropped some guys down in weight class and they did well," said Butler coach Scott Stoner. "It helped show us where some of the kids are."

Runyan recorded three pins and won two by forfeit while Coburn had two pins, a major decision, a decision and a forfeit.

"Josh had two pins and last year he didn't have a lot of pins," said Butler coach Scott Stoner. "That's showing a lot more and he's doing really well."

In the win over Port Allegany, both Josh and Dave Coburn (189) recorded 2-1 decisions in the final seconds to key the win.

Dave Coburn, Brian Nicelli (112), Ian McLaughlin (125), Stewart Rapone (130), Jon Sanko (145), Aaron Pascazi (160/171) all went 4-1 at the duals while Alex Evanoff (135) and freshman Marino Quercio (215) went 3-2.

Evanoff's 11-2 major decision win in the Port Allegany match sealed the win as Butler led by one point entering that final bout.

"Alex lost to the same kid last year by a few points," said Stoner.

Butler won 49 of its 65 matches and that was without heavyweight Marcus Hough, who was still mending from a shoulder injury. Stoner hopes to have him back for this week.

Butler (6-1) will host Avonworth Wednesday, then head to Shaler Friday in a pair of section matches.
