Butler ready to rock
For the second year in a row, the Ring in the Arts New Year's celebration has a smorgasbord of events for the last evening of 2005.
From 6 p.m. Saturday to past midnight, partygoers can enjoy music, food and fun. At midnight, area churches will sound their bells to ring in 2006, followed by Zambelli fireworks sponsored by the Butler County Bar Association.
"The year will be bigger and better," said Maggie Stock, Butler's mayor-elect and the event's chair.
This year, a free shuttle bus will make a four-stop loop during the entire evening. Valley Lines will run the bus, which will stop at the Butler Arts Council, 421 N. Main St.; the Penn Theater, 147 N. Main St.; the corner of Cunningham and Main streets; and Diamond Park.
The bus will start the approximately 10-minute loop at 7 p.m. and continue through midnight, Stock said.
A Ring in the Arts button allows entrance to the event's 15 venues. Venues offer music from about 14 performers, as well as dancing and prizes.
Buttons are $10 each. A $25 family price gets buttons for two adults and two children. Buttons are available at Friedman's and BiLo grocery stores, Miller's Shoes, the Butler County Symphony Office and the Cranberry Township Municipal Center.
Starting at 6 p.m. Saturday, buttons will also be available at Penn Theater for the regular price.
More than 210 buttons have been sold so far, said Sharon Geibel, the committee member who coordinated sales.
Stock said button sales have been "very steady." She encouraged groups, such as clubs, to come out and enjoy the evening.
"You don't have to have your own party, just come to this one," she said.
About 14 restaurants will be open for the event. In addition, some businesses will extend their hours for New Year's Eve, including Worsley's, 161 N. Main St.; the Laskey House, 215 W. New Castle St.; and the El Cabana Cigar Company, 145 N. Main St.
Events are open to children, including cartoons shown from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Penn Theater. Other venues will feature crafts, prizes and face painting.
The resolution center at the Morgan Center, 101 E. Diamond St., is your place to make New Year's resolutions and view the community's resolutions from last year.
After making a resolution, dance the night away to a variety of sounds. Dance to everything from big band music at the Cornerstone Commons to polka at Congregation B'nai Abraham.
The Herb Flowers Studio Dancers will shake a leg at Dance Impressions, where everyone is invited to dance in the New Year from 10 p.m. to midnight.
