PITTSBURGH — Utilityman Mike Edwards is the latest former Los Angeles Dodgers player to sign with the Pittsburgh Pirates, agreeing to a minor league contract.

Edwards hit .247 with 3 homers and 15 RBIs in 88 games last season for Los Angeles, playing third base and the outfield. After the season ended, manager Jim Tracy left the Dodgers and was hired as the Pirates manager.

The Pirates added former Dodgers reliever Giovanni Carrara last week, also signing him to a minor league contract. Right-handed reliever Terry Adams, another former Dodgers pitcher, signed with Pittsburgh in November.

Also signing minor league contracts with the Pirates were infielder Gookie Dawkins, a former Reds prospect who hasn't played in the majors since being with the Royals in 2003, and Paul Chiaffredo, the backup catcher at the Pirates' Triple-A Indianapolis farm club last season.

TEMPE, Ariz. — Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis received the Eddie Robinson Award as the nation's top college football coach on Sunday.Weis guided Notre Dame to a 9-2 record in his first season at the school after being lured from the New England Patriots, where as offensive coordinator he helped the team win three Super Bowls in four seasons.The Fighting Irish meet Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl on Monday.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Former Ohio State running back Maurice Clarett was accused of robbing two people at gunpoint in an alley behind a bar early Sunday, the latest trouble for the Buckeyes star who left the school in disgrace and failed to gain early entry into the NFL.Clarett was wanted on two counts of aggravated robbery. According to police, he left in a white sport utility vehicle with two other men and took only a cell phone from his alleged victims, who weren't injured.The 22-year-old Clarett fled when the bar owner or manager, who knew both Clarett and the victims, came into the alley and identified him shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday.

HOUSTON — Rice introduced Tulsa defensive coordinator Todd Graham as its new head coach on Sunday, one day after he helped the Golden Hurricane win the Liberty Bowl.

MIAMI — Miami Heat coach Pat Riley has signed a contract extension, the team announced Sunday without specifying any terms of the deal, including whether it addressed his role as coach or team president.Riley is 8-3 since taking over for Stan Van Gundy, who resigned as coach last month.

SMITHFIELD, N.C. — Former NBA player Charles Shackleford was arrested on drug and weapon charges during a routine traffic stop on Saturday.The 39-year-old Shackleford, who played at North Carolina State and with four NBA teams in six seasons, faces charges of carrying a concealed weapon, misdemeanor possession of marijuana and possession of cocaine.

DALLAS — The Dallas Stars will host the 2007 NHL All-Star game.The NHL hasn't held an All-Star game since 2004. The 2005 game was wiped out by the league's lockout, and this season's game was dropped so players can participate in the Winter Olympics.
