Defense keys SRU women to basketball victory

SLIPPERY ROCK — For Slippery Rock University's women's basketball team, it's not that defense wins.

It's defense out of necessity.

SRU (11-9, 3-2) rolled to its third consecutive PSAC West victory Sunday, using a constant high-pressure defense to throttle Shippensburg, 69-52.

The Red Raiders (10-9, 0-4) entered the day averaging 67.6 points per game. Clarion averages more than 70 points per game and SRU held the Golden Eagles to 39 points Wednesday.

"We don't have our offense figured out yet as to who's going to give us production," Rock coach Laurel Heilman said. "Until we do, we have to stay strong on the defensive side.

"I don't know if the players know that or not. I do know they've been getting after it. We've been scrappy in chasing the ball around."

No SRU player is averaging in double figures this season. Amanda Chojnacki leads the team with 9.6 points per game. Five others average between 6.2 and 7.9 points per contest.

Senior point guard Amber McFeely likes it that way.

"Teams don't know how to defend us," McFeely said. "Pretty much every team has one or two players who score a lot of points. We're all the same … Opponents don't know where our scoring is coming from."

The Rock had 10 different players score Saturday. McFeely had 13 points and five assists while Angela Greaser added 13 points. KellyAnn Staudinger scored 12 points off the bench.

McFeely had five assists. The Grove City High School graduate has 132 on the season — 6.7 per game — and ranks second in the PSAC, fifth nationally in Division II, in that category.

Heilman used 12 players in the first half in order to continue pressuring the ball.

"We know from scouting them that Shippensburg doesn't like pressure," Heilman said. "Pressuring the basketball really isn't our game, but we felt it would work to our benefit today."

Shippensburg lost two players to ACL injuries in the preseason and has had just seven players all year.

The Red Raiders failed to score in the first five minutes Saturday and fell behind by 20 in the final two minutes of the first half. The Rock's biggest lead all day was 58-34 with 8:22 left in the game.

"Slippery Rock jumped on us right away and we didn't respond," Red Raiders coach Kristy Trn said. "Just about every team we play pressures us.

"If I was coaching against us, I'd pressure us. Our guards have had trouble handling the ball all year."

Shippensburg had 20 turnovers Saturday. Shanna Oaddams scored 15 points and Megan Fogle 12 for the Red Raiders.

The Rock has won five of its last six games overall and stayed among the top four teams in the PSAC West standings. The top four finishers in the league make the PSAC Tournament.

"We're in the hunt," Heilman said. "That's all we can say right now. We have a lot of tough games left. We still have to go to California and Shippensburg and I've never won in either place. Indiana's nationally ranked, too."

SRU travels to Indiana (Pa.) for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off Wednesday.

The Rock (1-19, 0-5) dropped its 18th straight game, falling out of the contest late in the first half.PSAC West-leading Shippensburg (15-4, 4-0) managed just a 15-14 lead with 11:50 left in the first half before using a 13-2 run to break the game open. The lead peaked at 18, 43-25, with 15:34 left in the game."Our total effort wasn't there today," SRU coach John Marhefka said. "I was proud of our effort at Clarion (60-54 overtime loss Wednesday). I wasn't proud of my team after this game."Trailing 54-37 midway through the second half, SRU used a 10-2 run to pull within 56-47 with 6:35 remaining. But Ship's Chuck Davis completed a three-point play at the other end seconds later and the Red Raiders were never threatened again."We must lead the league in the proverbial … and one," Marhefka said. "We can score, but we don't match that intensity on defense."We're not shot-blockers, but our guys keep trying to block shots and we get in trouble."Davis led four Shippensburg players in double figures with 23 points. Brandon Thompson paced SRU with 23 points, but no teammate finished in double digits."Brandon was sick today. His stomach was bothering him, but he still played as hard as he could play," Marhefka said. "People will look at his scoring, a flamboyant shot or something, and cheer for it."It's the effort on defense … That's why he gets playing time from me."Women's BoxSHIPPENSBURG (52)Kim Strickland 2-5 2-5 6, Shanna Oaddams 5-12 5-6 15, Samantha Ramus 2-7 1-1 6, Megan Fogle 4-10 2-2 12, Caitlin MacPherson 3-5 0-0 7, Elise Mercer 0-1 0-0 0, Phylicia Bessick 2-6 0-0 6.
