FCA All-Star Cheerleaders coaches Jennifer Watterson and Beth Dittmer, both former Butler varsity cheerleaders, won the choreography award for the Tanzanite team at the Pittsburgh Poison Winter Blast recently at North Hills High School.

Pink Ice, Emeralds, Turquoise, Sapphires, Tanzanites, Rubies and Diamonds, all FCA teams based in Sarver, finished in first place in their respective divisions.

All seven squads will compete at the Cheersport All-Star Cheerleading Nationals Feb. 18 and 19 in Atlanta.

Butler junior kicker Chris Haley was named first team all-state Class AAAA by the Pennsylvania Football News.Haley and Butler punter Andrew Goettler made first team Quad North last season. Tornado quarterback Nick Monteleone and defensive lineman Eric Petanovich made second team while receiver Jordan Roycroft made honorable mention.

WASHINGTON — The Washington Nationals have offered a non-guaranteed, incentive-laden major league contract to Sammy Sosa, assistant general manager Tony Siegle said Wednesday.They previously had offered the slugger a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training.Sosa, who ranks seventh on the career home run list with 574, hit .221 with 14 homers and 45 RBIs last season with the Baltimore Orioles.

ALLEN PARK, Mich. — Former Rams coach Mike Martz became the Detroit Lions' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Wednesday, a week after he turned down the job for financial reasons.Martz interviewed with new coach Rod Marinelli and team president Matt Millen nine days ago, but said last Thursday he wasn't taking the job because of money differences.Contract terms weren't disclosed.
