IN BRIEF

GREENVILLE — Thiel College will cut six varsity sports at the end of this academic year, citing reasons ranging from lack of participation and competitiveness to rising travel costs.

Men's and women's teams in golf, cross country and tennis are being cut.

"We arrived at our decision after evaluating our athletic program and our fiscal responsibilities," said Thiel's president and CEO Lance A. Masters.

All of the coaches in the affected sports also hold head coaching responsibilities in other sports, so none will be out of work, the school said.

The golf and tennis teams will complete their spring schedules, but next year the school will encourage the formation of intramural or club teams in those sports. It wasn't immediately clear how many students are affected.
