Woman stabbed 6 times

Intruder broke into senior's city home

A Butler senior citizen suffered several stab wounds to the face, head and neck early Sunday morning during a home invasion at her house on the city's South Side, Butler police said.

Yvonne Cook, 65, remains in Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh; her condition was not known, but it is not considered life threatening, said Butler police Chief Tim Fennell.

Police said Cook was apparently sleeping about 3:50 a.m. when an unknown man forced his way into her Hallet Street home and demanded money.

The woman, who lives alone, described the intruder as black with a thin build. She said the man either was wearing a mask or had a shirt pulled up over his face, she told police.

The woman, who turned over an undisclosed amount of money, was stabbed six times, Fennell said.

She managed to call 911 after the man left the house. Police later found a door had been forced open.

"She wasn't able to tell us much that happened that night, because of her wounds and the amount of blood she lost," Fennell said.

Police do not know if Cook knew her assailant.

She was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital and later transferred to Allegheny General.

Detective Sgt. Mark Peffer this morning traveled to the Pittsburgh hospital to speak to Cook.
