Stabbing victim on mend

Violent attack investigated

A 65-year-old Butler woman remains hospitalized with a half dozen stab wounds suffered in a home invasion early Sunday morning.

But Yvonne Cook could be back at her Hallet Street house later this week, authorities said.

Butler police continue to investigate the assault and robbery but provided few details about what clues have turned up.

"We're actively pursuing strong leads," said Detective Sgt. Mark Peffer this morning, but he declined to say if police have identified a suspect.

Police said Cook was alone in her South Side home about 3:50 a.m. when a man forced his way inside and demanded money.

She described the intruder as black with a thin build. She said the man either was wearing a mask or had a shirt pulled up over his face.

Cook, who turned over an undisclosed amount of money, was stabbed six times, suffering wounds to her face, head and neck.

Despite her wounds that caused profuse bleeding, she managed to call 911 after the man left the house. Investigators do not believe anything else was taken.

Police were unable to interview Cook at length immediately after the attack because of her injuries.

She was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital before being transferred to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

"She's going to be OK," Peffer said. "She's in the recovery phase now."

He spoke in-depth with Cook at the hospital later Monday and she "was able to offer more information" about the attack.

Police canvassed the neighborhood; however, no one reported seeing or hearing anything suspicious before or during the attack.

Police said Cook lives at the house with a young grandchild; but the child was not at home when Cook was attacked.
