Victor C.R. Nielsen

Victor C.R. Nielsen, 84, a two-year resident of Jefferson Township, died Monday at the Veterans Affairs hospital in Oakland. He formerly lived in West Deer Township, Allegheny County, for 40 years.

Born Jan. 5, 1922, in Corry, Erie County, he was the son of Carl and May Collins Nielsen.

He was a 1940 graduate of Corry High School. During World War II, he served in the Army's Co. H, 507th Parachute Infantry in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He received a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star Medal, the Distinguished Unit Badge and five Bronze Battle Stars.

When he returned from the war, he was a steelworker at American Bridge, Lawrenceville, for more than 40 years and retired in 1984.

He enjoyed spending summers in Corry, where he was a life member of the VFW Post 264. He also was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter PA 64, the Airborne Static Line of College Park, Ga., and the 507th Parachute Infantry Association Unit H Co.

Survivors include two daughters, Jennie Carr of West Deer Township and Mary Troyan of Penn Township; three sons, Vincent Nielsen of Butler, Victor Nielsen of Harrisville and Derrick Chapman of England; and seven grandchildren Charlotte, Wayne and Vincent L. Nielsen of Butler, Alan and Brad Troyan of Penn Township and Steven and David Chapman of England.

He also is survived by a brother, Quinten Nielsen of Warren, Pa.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

His wife, Genevieve Nielsen, died Aug 30, 2005. A sister, Christina Hand, and a brother, Vincent Nielsen, also preceded him in death.

<B>NIELSEN </B>— A memorial Mass for Victor C.R. Nielsen, who died Monday, May 22, 2006, will be celebrated at 7 p.m. Friday at St. John Byzantine Catholic Church, Lyndora. Burial will be at Pine Grove Cemetery, Corry.Arrangements are being handled by the <B>SIWICKI-YANICKO FUNERAL HOME</B>, West Deer Township.
