James L. Harmon

James L. Harmon, 86, of Bradys Bend died at 6:50 a.m. Monday in the Chicora Medical Center.

Born Aug. 16, 1919, in Bradys Bend, he was the son of James H. and Mary A. Rayburg Harmon.

Mr. Harmon served for 46 months in the 1596th Army Air Force Base Unit as an aerial engineer during World War II. He was stationed in England and Northern Ireland and was the recipient of a European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal. He was discharged with the rank of corporal.

Mr. Harmon was a 1938 graduate of East Brady High School and attended Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis., for three years. An able carpenter, plumber and electrician, Mr. Harmon built the house he and his wife have lived in since 1975.

He also built a boat that he used on the Allegheny River.

He worked at Pullman Standard in Butler for two years, and then worked at the Union Carbide's Linde Air plant near Kittanning for 17 years, where he was president of the Linde Air Kittanning Local Union 8-600 and secretary/treasurer of the Union Carbide Nationwide Council of the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union.

He also worked as an assistant superintendent of road maintenance for the Pennsylvania Department Of Transportation for 10 years.

Mr. Harmon was secretary/treasurer for Bradys Bend Township and the Bradys Bend Water and Sewer Authority.

He was a lifelong member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Bradys Bend, where he was a lector, Eucharistic minister, religious education teacher and parish council member.

Surviving are his wife, Mary P. Madden Harmon of Bradys Bend, whom he married June 10, 1946; five sons, Laurence Harmon and his wife, Steffi Domike, of Pittsburgh, Christopher Harmon and his wife, Peg, and Matthew Harmon and his wife, Pamela, all of Tucson, Ariz., Mark Harmon and his wife Becky of Lancaster, S.C., and David Harmon of Herman; five daughters, Eileen and her husband, Michael Hout, of Oakland, Calif., Virginia and her husband, Robert Pfahler, of Fenelton, Sarah and her husband, John Grove, of Tucson, Ariz., Joan and her husband, Jody Schnur, of Herman, and Bert Skye of Tucson, Ariz.; a sister, Patricia Andreassi of Butler; 24 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, George, Paul "Gus" and Richard, and a sister, Mary Lillian Pick.

<B>HARMON</B> — Friends of James L. Harmon, who died Monday, May 29, 2006, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the <B>Charles B. Buechele Funeral Home</B>, 105 Fourth St., East Brady.A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, with the Rev. Anthony Ditto officiating.Burial will be in the St. Mary Cemetery, Bradys Bend.American Legion Post 488 will conduct military honors Saturday in the cemetery.
