The 11th annual West Penn Junior Team Tennis Championships are taking place until 2:30 p.m. today at the Butler Country Club courts.
Eight organizations will each send two mixed doubles teams — ages 12-and-under and 18-and-under — into round-robin competition. The event is open to spectators at no admission charge.
The eight competing teams are Allegheny Country Club from Sewickley, Butler Country Club, Butler Junior Tennis, Chapel Gate Swim Club from Fox Chapel, Club 4 Life from Monroeville, Edgeworth Tennis Club from Sewickley, Oxford North from Wexford and defending champion Forest Hills Swim Club from Churchill.
Brett and Jenna Rinker of Slippery Rock won two more events on the youth golf circuits recently.Brett Rinker shot a 76 at Butlers Golf Club in Elizabeth to win the 11-year-old age division in the U.S. Kids World Open Qualifier. He will now head to Pinehurst, N.C., from July 26 to 30 to represent Pennsylvania in the U.S. Kids World Open.Jenna Rinker, 14, carded a 93 to take first place in the girls ages 13-to-15 division in the latest Southwest Junior Golf Tour event held at Velleaire Golf Club last week in Hinckley, Ohio.
SEWICKLEY — With their performances at the 38th annual Trusted Choice Big I Junior Golf Classic Wednesday at Diamond Run Golf Club in Sewickley, Brian Routhieaux of Gibsonia and Joseph Rukas of Sarver have qualified for the IIAJC State Championships, which will be held July 13 at The Founders Course at Penn National in Fayetteville.Routhieaux, who attended Mars High School, and Rukas, fired a 77 and 78, respectively, at the southwestern Pennsylvania qualifier, one of four regionals that advance winners to the state finals.There were 51 boys who took part in the U-19 tournament, 14 of whom qualified for the state championship. The Big I Junior Classic is one of the top five junior golf events in the country.
