Music, arts festival returns to BC3
Butler County Community College is bringing back its Music and Arts Festival to celebrate the college's 40th anniversary.
The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at BC3's main campus, rain or shine. The festival is free and open to the public.
The day will feature performances in four locations on campus — the Outdoor Forum, the John A. Beck, Jr. Library, the Administration Building and Succop Theater.
There will also be three indoor art exhibits and an outdoor arts fair, with 30 artisans and food vendors.
Music performances will be going on all day.
The Outdoor Forum will feature Beatles tribute band Gary and the Moondogs, jazz vocal group Swingsation and classic rock band 16 Eyes, among others.
The library events will include an African American storyteller, a blues rock duo, the Trinity Jazz Orchestra, and an original children's play written by BC3 student Kelly McIntyre.
The Administration Building will house folk rock, acoustic and alternative rock music, and the Succop Theater will have performances featuring the Opera Theatre Pittsburgh doing "Selections from Carmen Jones."
The outdoor arts fair includes drawings, paintings, jewelry, photography and ceramics for sale by local artisans.
Local watercolorist Bill Rettig will paint and sell his work all day, and Scott Davidson will be selling his photographs of McConnells Mill.
John Buxton will be selling his paintings and prints of the French and Indian War, and will be available to discuss the period. Native Americans from All Nations Gathering will show Native American artifacts near Buxton's display.
John Hutchinson, a Saxonburg boat builder, is bringing two of his handmade sailboats to the festival. Both are antique reproductions and will be located near the Armstrong Lodge.
The amateur art show in the Mary Hulton Phillips Gallery in the Science and Tech Building will feature 50 pieces of art created by area artisans. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third places as well as honorable mention. Jurors are Glen Brunken, art professor at Slippery Rock University, and Nancy Jean Rose, graphic design instructor at BC3.
The Associated Artists of Butler County will have an exhibit of work by its members in the Lawson Board Room gallery space in the Administration Building.
The Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau will have a photography exhibit in the AK Steel lobby in the Science and Tech Building. The exhibit features 96 photographs by area photographers.
Children's activities will be available outside the Armstrong Lodge and will include face painting, a coloring contest and two shows by ventriloquist Jenny Taylor. BC3 math professor Bessie Jefferies will teach children how to make NASA designed rockets out of straws as well.
The Butler Musical Theatre Guild will round out the day with a performance of "110 in the Shade" at 8 p.m. in the Succop Theater. The guild also performs the show at 8 p.m. tonight and at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Tickets for this performance are available at May's Music Shoppe, East Jefferson Street, or the Succop Theater box office.
