Daniel J. Dillon, M.D., 78, formerly of Butler, died Saturday at Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh.

Born and raised in Butler, he was the son of John C. and Ann M. Dougherty Dillon. He was a graduate of the St. Paul School in Butler, Butler High School, the University of Notre Dame and the Georgetown University School of Medicine. He trained in general surgery at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh followed by a fellowship at the Lahey Clinic.

Dr. Dillon practiced surgery for 30 years at Mercy Hospital and was chairman of the Department of Surgery from 1969 to 1988. He enjoyed caring for his patients, taught residents during his tenure and made many friends along the way. He had a genuine respect, love and compassion for others, with a quick smile and a mischievous wit.

He was an avid reader and a lifelong fan of golf, crossword puzzles, bridge and Notre Dame. He enjoyed his retirement years to the end and loved his Romeo lunches.

Surviving are his wife of almost 50 years, Joan Mary Beard Dillon; a son, Dr. Stephen V. Dillon and his wife, Betsy; two grandchildren, Daniel and Juliana Dillon; and a brother, attorney Charles Dillon and his wife, Nina. He also is survived by 25 nieces and nephews, half of whom called him "Uncle Jim" and the other half "Uncle Dan."

He was preceded in death by a brother, Judge John Dillon; and a sister, Ann Marie Carlin and her husband, Dr. Gerald Carlin.

<B>DILLION</B> — Friends of Daniel J. Dillon, M.D., who died Saturday, June 17, 2006, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the <B>Laughlin Memorial Chapel</B>, 222 Washington Road, Mount Lebanon, Pa.A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in the St. Anne's Church.Memorial donations may be made to the Family Hospice, 50 Moffett St., Pittsburgh, PA 15243.For information visit www.laughlinfuneralhome.com.
