Martha Haverstick

Martha J. Haverstick, 84, died Wednesday at her home in Lititz, Lancaster County, with her family at her side after living 17 years with multiple myeloma.

She received a bachelor of science degree from Penn State University, a master of science degree from the University of Wisconsin and her doctorate of education degree from Boston University.

Miss Haverstick taught in the public school systems in New York and Pennsylvania before joining the faculty at the University of Maryland. In 1962, she accepted a position at Slippery Rock University as the first coordinator of women's programs in physical education and retired in 1985.

She was a member of many educational organizations during her career as a professor of physical education and the recipient of numerous awards for outstanding teaching and service to her community.

She was a board member and past president of the Keystone Tall Trees Girl Scout Council and maintained her interest in and support of scouting.

Her other interests were many and varied, including hiking, tennis, golf, boating, reading, rug hooking, wood carving, drawing, writing and the preservation of our environment.

She had a lifelong love of Lancaster County and its history and returned to live there in 1995.

Since her retirement, she has traveled, attended Elderhostels and maintained contact with many of her former students and colleagues.

She will be remembered by all whose lives she touched.

Survivors include two nieces, Margaret Field of Wayne, Chester County, and Martha Byler of New Jersey.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clayton D. and Margaret Heiss Haverstick. Her sisters, Myra, Elizabeth and Margaret Byler, also preceded her in death.

Haverstick, who died Wednesday, June 21, 2006, will be private and at the convenience of the family.Contributions may be made to Associated Scientists at Woods Hole, P. O.
