PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. — Alex Ziegler had three singles in as many at-bats Tuesday to help Butler Township's 11- and 12-year-old Little League baseball team defeat Lehigh Valley, 7-5, in the state championship game Tuesday.
David Tompkins added a homer, single and five RBIwhile Dalton Koebler was the winning pitcher.
Butler Township moves on to mid-Atlantic Regional play in Bristol, Conn. Its first game is at 8 p.m. Sunday.
Thursday's Eagle County League semifinal game between Zelienople and Saxonburg I at Highfield Park was postponed because of lightning and heavy rain.Zelienople had scored four runs in the top of the first inning and Saxonburg had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the first when lightning halted the game. After 20 minutes of continuous rain, the game was called.Since the game did not go at least 4½ innings, it will be replayed from the beginning. at 6 p.m. today at Highfield.
BOSTON — Matt Clement's season may be over.MLB.com is reporting thatthe Butler native and Boston Red Sox pitcher had another setback in his attempt to return from tendinitis in the bicep of his pitching arm.The club is shutting down the hurler, who was recently moved from the 15- to the 60-day disabled list, for at least three weeks in the hopes the tendinitis will subside.Clement is still experiencing pain throwing off the mound.His last start was June 14 and he is 5-5 with a 6.61 ERA.
CANONSBURG — Marissa DeCola of Center Township won the Southwest Pennsylvania Junior Golf Tour's final event of the season at Southpointe Country Club Thursday, carding a 47 for nine holes in the 12-year-old division.Her brother, Mark, finished in a three-way tie for first place i n the 9-year-old division. His 52 tied him with Luke Miller and Owen Miller.
