George Walowen
George Walowen, 82, of Walker Valley, N.Y., formerly of Butler, died Wed-nesday at his home after an illness.
Born in Lyndora, March 2, 1924, he was a son of Frank and Anna Bogdan Walowen.
He was a commercial artist and had worked for the former Rahl Studios in New York, N.Y., where he made artwork for magazines and commercials.
Mr. Walowen was a talented artist and did painting and icons for several churches, a seminary and family members. He was well known in his area as a dealer in folk art antiques and usually participated in the Rhinebeck Antique Show and other antique and art shows in the Catskill Mountains area of New York.
He was a frequent visitor in the Butler area. He moved to New York City after World War II; and in 1960, he moved to Upstate New York. He especially loved his pet dogs and was an expert flower gardener.
During World War II, he served with the Army in Central Europe.
He was a member of All Saints Russian Orthodox Church in New Paltz, N.Y., and St. Andrew Orthodox Church in Lyndora.
Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Harry (Nellie) Kuzmenchuk of Southampton, N.J., Mrs. Warren (Olga) Cochran of Lyndora and Mrs. William (Maryanne "Penny") Zulick of Renfrew; three brothers, Walter Walowen and his wife, Lolly, of Aurora Colo., Victor Walowen and his wife, Shirley, and Frank Walowen and his wife June, all of Butler. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
<B>WALOWEN </B>— There will be no public visitation for George Walowen, who died Wednesday, July 5, 2006. A private funeral service will be held for his family at St. Andrew Orthodox Church in Lyndora. The Rev. Joseph Wargo will officiate.
