Butler faces veteran Norwin squad

BUTLER TWP — Garry Cathell will be familiar with more than just his own football team Friday night at Art Bernardi Stadium.

The Butler coach will recognize his opponent as well.

The Golden Tornado host Norwin for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. The Knights return seven starters on both sides of the football.

"In reality, we only played them two games ago,"Cathell said. Butler ended last season with a 37-20 victory at Norwin in a WPIAL crossover game.

Both teams have different agendas this time around.

The Tornado return an experienced team as well and are coming off a 26-0 victory at Kiski Area. Norwin suffered a 21-17 loss to visiting Seneca Valley.

Twice in the final minutes, the Knights ventured deep into Seneca Valley territory in search of the winning score, only to be turned away on downs and by an interception.

"They lost a tough one last week,"Cathell said. "They're going to come in here hungry. They'll be ready to hit us and jump on us."

Norwin has a new quarterback — J.T. Redshaw — who possesses a strong arm. Butler surrendered 241 yards passing last week and needed three interceptions by Cory Haley in the end zone to preserve the shutout.

"We had trouble covering the tight end, but that was more about confusion as a unit than about any one player,"Cathell said. "We'll get that squared away.

"Take away a couple of those big-yardage plays to that kid and our pass coverage really wasn't that bad. We know we can improve in a lot of areas."

Kiski managed just 57 yards rushing last week, a key statistic in that Norwin possesses a solid one-two rushing attack with Tyler Urban and Dan Kozak.

Kozak led Norwin with 700 yards rushing last year.

"Their fullback (Urban) is a big, tall kid, and he's solid at linebacker, too,"Cathell said. "They run a lot of pro-I. I've known (Norwin coach) Danny (Conwell) for a long time and he's always been a big Wing-T guy. He likes to run the belly and the inside trap."

The Tornado came out of last week's game healthy. Cathell said the team's most pressing issue is for the linebackers to settle in.

Eric Petanovich moved from defensive end to linebacker this year as Butler switched from a 50 set to a 43. Tom McPherson is used to playing middle linebacker, but the Tornado linebackers have different assignments with this defense.

"We need to get our linebackers situated,"Cathell admitted. "We'll be much better in that area this week."

Petanovich was not cleared to participate in contact drills during the preseason until Aug. 29.

"Eric showed some flashes last week, but he was just missing the reps up until now,"Cathell said. "He was a little beaten up physically going into the game because he hadn't had the contact.

"He's still in great shape. He didn't play badly last week at all, yet he'll play much better Friday."

Nick Monteleone threw for 155 yards and rushed for 70 last week. Chris Haley booted a 33-yard field goal, averaged 40.3 yards per punt and 59 yards on kickoffs despite playing on a wet field.

Yet, based on expectations, both could be accused of not playing his best game.

"I wasn't all that happy with Nick's ball mechanics. He didn't carry out his fakes all that well,"Cathell said. "Chris didn't hit his 42-yard field goal try well, but sometimes we expect these guys to be perfect.

"Both of them had good games and they're both going to be fine."

Cathell said running backs Dan D'Amore and Mike Bresnahan will split time at running back, with Ben Ashcraft being the fullback.

"I like the one-two punch those two kids provide us,"Cathell said. "Michael would have been our No. 2 tailback last year (behind Bobby Alexander), but he broke his collarbone at Heinz Field (in Week 2)."

Butler has no injuries of note entering Week 2 this year and its junior varsity is coming off a 12-6 win Monday at Woodland Hills.

"So far, so good," Cathell said.
