Oktoberfest, car cruise wed

Events pair for 3-day festival

EVANS CITY— Organizers of the borough's annual Oktoberfest are pairing a popular summer combination for this year's fall festival.

The three-day event, which starts Friday and features craft and food vendors, as well as a parade and contests, will also pair the annual car cruise with Johnny Angel and the Halos.

Organizer Tim Deily said the car cruise and concert, which wrap up the festival events on Sunday,

Johnny Angel and the Halos, he said, are typically a large draw.

"People go to see them wherever they go," he said.

This year's festival also features other musical acts as well, including local musician John Burg and one-man band Waldo Young.

This year's Oktoberfest will also feature a new event, Oktoberfest Challenge.

Deily said the contest, modeled after NBC's reality show "Fear Factor," will challenge contestants to competitions ranging from physical obstacle course to trying on clothing that's too small for the contestant and riding mini tricycles.

But, he said, the contest won't face the sick-out eating events faced by contestants on the NBC program.

"It's more of a physical sort of thing than a gross-out," Deily said.

Deily said the contest will include both children and adult age groups.

This year, festival goers will also get to vote for their favorite float in the annual parade, Deily said.

At 9:30 a.m. Saturday, as the floats line up for the 11 a.m. parade, people will have a chance to enter their vote for the People's Choice award.

This year's Oktoberfest will also include tours of the Evans City Historical Society, the Little Miss and Mr. Oktoberfest contest, Cranberry Township's Mobile Fire House, a concert by the Evans City Middle School band, a library book sale and a kid's tractor pull.

The festival, which starts Friday, will end at 5 p.m. Sunday with a community church service.
