Rock expects aerial circus

The football will be flying Saturday night at Kutztown's University Field.

The Golden Bears (1-1) entertain Slippery Rock University (2-1) in a 6 p.m. game that features the top two passing teams in the PSAC.

"They've got the top-rated quarterback in pass efficiency and the conference's leading receiver,"SRU coach George Mihalik said. "No doubt, they've had a lot of success throwing the football."

Mihalik can look in a mirror while making that statement as well.

"Their quarterback is one of the best around,"said first-year Kutztown coach Raymond Monica. "He does a good job of running their team and getting the ball in the hands of different receivers."

Kyle Spotts has completed 34 of 58 passes for 565 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions for Kutztown. Elfren Quiles has 16 catches for 269 yards to lead the PSAC. Brett Harbach has nine catches for 109 yards while Larry Baumgardner has pulled in six passes for 144.

"We have to control their running game and put them in passing mode all of the time,"Mihalik said. "We'll have a better chance of defending them that way."

Nate Crookshank has completed 49 of 72 passes for 751 yards, eight TDs and only one interception for SRU. Colin Golden has 15 catches for 126 yards, Luke Wetzel has 14 catches for 293 yards, Paul Favers has 10 receptions for 199 yards.

The Rock has won all four previous meetings between these schools, the most recent being a 68-38 triumph at Kutztown in 1999.

While SRUhopes to extend its winning streak to three games Saturday, Kutztown is coming off a 42-27 loss at Shippensburg. The Golden Bears opened the season with a 28-10 win over Clarion.

Monica came to Kutztown after spending eight years as defensive coordinator at Temple. Before that, he was an assistant coach at Northern Alabama for nine seasons and was part of three Division IInational championships.

Kutztown finished 2-8 last year and 4-6 in 2004. The Golden Bears return eight starters on offense and six on defense.

Maurice Adams (662 yards last season) leads Kutztown with 113 yards rushing. He is averaging 36.2 yards on four kickoff returns, including the touchdown.

Cory Lacek leads The Rock defense with five sacks and tops the PSACwith eight tackles for loss. Linebackers Seth Ransdall and Jerome Whiting have 21 tackles each.

SRUnose guard Troy Stininger injured an ankle in last week's 46-0 win over Mansfield and might not play this week. Redshirt freshman Jason Curenton and sophomore Justin Hoppe will both see time there if Stininger cannot play.

Freshman A.J. Saunders rushed for 101 yards against Mansfield. Slippery Rock High graduate Travis Sarver leads SRUwith 205 yards rushing through three games.

"Travis is still our starter,"Mihalik said. "But we like to rotate two backs and A.J. is getting to that point, though he's not there yet."

Safety Brian Bingnear leads Kutztown with 17 tackles and two interceptions. Defensive end Mike Gross has 15 tackles.
