KINDERGARTEN CUTIES — Mrs. Donald B. Nicholson, left, gives instructions as Debbie Fry, Carolyn Kirkand and Daniel Fisher go through the intricate maneuvers of a musical game at the Butler YMCA kindergarten class on May 8, 1964. The preschool youngsters, one of four groups in half-day sessions at the YMCA sponsored by the Butler Community Kindergarten Association, were learning about birds and farms that month. At that time, kindergarten was not mandatory. Today, the YMCA on North Washington Street offers a child care program for children up to 5 years old. The program is open from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and is geared to prepare children for kindergarten. The groups are broken down by age, and have different education levels for each classroom. The children also spend time swimming, exercising through games, and go on occasional field trips.
