Man arraigned for break-ins

He is accused in 2 incidents

EVANS CITY — A Cranberry Township man faces charges stemming from a break-in at a Jackson Township home and the attempted break-in at a second home on the same street earlier this summer.

James A. Sopher, 20, of 103 Middleground Place was arraigned Thursday before District Judge Wayne Seibel on charges of criminal trespass and criminal attempt.

Police plan to file additional charges at Sopher's preliminary hearing scheduled Nov. 1 before Seibel.

Seibel's office did not have information on those additional charges and Jackson Township police Chief Len Keller was unavailable for comment.

Police used cell phone records, eyewitness identification, fingerprints and vehicle identification to charge Sopher in the break-in and the attempted break-in on Pattison Street Extension.

Jackson police had been called to the residence of John Marburger at 631 Pattison Street Extension when he and his wife returned home on the evening of July 24 and discovered their front door and the rear dining room window open.

Police discovered two handprints at the scene, one of which matched Sopher, according to court documents.

Two days earlier, police had been called to the residence of Ben Miller at 577 Pattison Street Extension to investigate an attempted burglary.

Miller told police that, when he came home that evening, he found a white male coming from the front door area of the home.

The man, later identified as Sopher, asked Miller if he was interested in a Web-based sale venture.

He then wrote a telephone number and his name, James, on a piece of paper and gave it to Miller, court reports indicated.

The man then left in a dark green Acura Integra GS with damage to the front end.

Miller, a short time later, discovered his bathroom window in the lower level had been pried open.

Miller was able to identify Sopher from a photographic line-up by Jackson police as the man who was at his residence on July 22.

Police also got a search warrant for cellular phone records of the number given to Miller, which were registered to Sopher's mother.
