Donation earmarked for downtown design
The Citizens Bank Foundation has given $10,000 to Butler's Revitalization Committee to help pay for streetscape planning.
Ann Morrison, Citizens senior vice president with the governmental banking group in Butler, gave the gift to Vince Tavolario, committee chairman, at the group's Oct. 10 meeting.
Morrison and Tavolario said the money will help pay for landscape and architectural designs for the downtown.
"We need about $80,000 or $90,000 just for the designs, so Citizens' gift is a big help," Tavolario said.
Morrison said the bank's foundation hopes revitalization will bring jobs to Butler.
Tavolario said it will be a year or so before the committee is ready to begin streetscape planning.
First the city must be accepted into the state's Main Street program, which provides five years of funding for a manager to direct day-to-day revitalization efforts.
Tavolario said his committee has received more than $105,000 in pledges to match the money needed for the Main Street program and to help pay for the manager past the initial five years.
Pledges have come from: Burt Hill, Butler Eagle, Butler Technologies, Cornerstone Commons, D.P.P. Management, Hefren-Tillotson, Hollypointe Development, Kuhn & Beall DMD, Milo's Jewelry, Morgan Management, Citizens Bank, Natili Restaurants, Olsen Engineering, T.W. Phillips Oil and Gas, attorney Tim Shaffer, Specialized Staffing, Stepanian & Muscatello, Thompson Miller Funeral Home and Young Funeral Home.
The city's Main Street application is under consideration by officials in Harrisburg.
In the 1980s, Butler was a member of this program, but did not invest money for the manager's salary after the state money was gone, causing the program to end.
