Butler man hangs himself from city bridge
A 34-year-old Butler man committed suicide Saturday morning by hanging himself with a rope from the Gen. Richard Butler Bridge on South Main Street, city police said.
A Bessemer Railroad engineer about 7:45 a.m. spotted the man hanging from the 14-foot rope. Police said the man had tied the rope to a bridge railing.
Authorities closed the northbound lanes until 9:20 a.m. Butler County Deputy Coroner Larry Barr pronounced the man dead at the scene.
Police Chief Tim Fennell said police recently arrested the man stemming from a violation of a court-issued protection from abuse order obtained by his girlfriend.
The man, a Butler native, also had a criminal record in Butler County that included convictions for simple assault, endangering the welfare of children and burglary, according to court records.
