Rock scores sweep

SRU tied atop PSAC West

Slippery Rock University's baseball team swept a doubleheader at Lock Haven Saturday and moved into a first-place tie in the PSACWest.

SRU (18-8, 4-2) defeated the Bald Eagles 13-8 in eight innings in the first game and cruised to an 11-2 triumph in the nightcap.

Indiana (Pa.) and Shippensburg split a twinbill Saturday, leaving both of those teams at 4-2 in PSACWest play as well. The Rock meets IUPin home-and-home doubleheaders beginning Friday at Critchfield Park.

Last Friday's scheduled twinbill against Lock Haven (7-17, 1-5) at Critchfield Park was postponed due to inclement weather and is scheduled to be made up this afternoon.

The Rock has won four straight games and is ranked 24th on the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association's national poll.

In Game 1 Saturday, Jacob Oswalt had two doubles, a single and four RBIto key a 13-hit Rock attack. Phil Butch added three hits in five at bats and had two RBI.

Slippery Rock High School grad Billy Messer had two hits and a RBI. Karns City graduate Travis Trimbur hit a sacrifice fly.

Craig Misiewicz, the second of three SRUpitchers, picked up the win.

Rich Hocanson improved his record to 4-0 in getting the win in Game 2. He took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before allowing two runs on a pair of hits.

Scott Bender paced the Rock offense in the second game with three hits and five RBI, including his first home run of the season.

Grove City graduate Billy Herman, M.J. Parsons and Jim Eimiller contributed two hits each. Lock Haven committed seven errors and allowed eight unearned runs.

Mark Tanner and Chris Squeglia were scheduled to start on the mound against Lock Haven today. The Rock is 8-4 against regional rivals this spring.
