BELLEFONTE — Prosecutors dropped charges against one of six Penn State football players involved in an off-campus fracas, but pursued their case against the five others at a hearing today.

Standout starting cornerback Justin King, 19, of Pittsburgh, had been charged with criminal trespass, disorderly conduct and harassment, but prosecutors said they were dropping him from the case for lack of evidence.

All six players were in court for a hearing over their roles in the April 1 fight at an apartment that sent two people to the hospital.

Among the six is Tyrell Sales of Butler, who is facing one count each of criminal trespass, disorderly conduct and harassment.

In morning testimony, two the apartment's tenants said King was inside but not a participant in the melee.

Joseph McGarrity and his roommate, Larry Himes, both Penn State students, also testified police showed them a Penn State football media guide as a way to identify assailants.

But when asked in court Friday to identify who may have barged into the apartment, McGarrity pointed out only King and another player who has not been charged.

King's attorney, Ron McGlaughlin, said McGarrity's inability to identify any of the attackers presented a problem for the prosecution's case.

"Obviously, it was a chaotic situation," he said.

Centre County District Attorney Michael Madeira said there were dozens of others in a hallway outside the apartment, but that authorities decided not to charge anyone who had not entered the unit.
