Slippery Rock University track and field athletes Jennifer Hansen and Jeff Weiss were named as recipients of the PSAC Spring Top Ten Award.
The award recognizes student athletes who distinguish themselves in the classroom and in athletic competition. To be eligible, nominees must have a 3.25 cumulative GPA and be a regular or a top substitute on their team.
Hansen, a sophomore pole vaulter on the women's team, has a 4.0 GPA as an exercise science major. She is a two-time all-American, placing second in the nation this season and fourth last year.
Weiss, a sophomore distance runner on the men's team, is a four-time all-American performer., including the past two track and field seasons. He was fourth in the nation the past two seasons in the 10,000-meter run.
PARIS — Justine Henin claimed her third consecutive French Open title and fourth overall Saturday, taking advantage of 19-year-old Ana Ivanovic's nervous play to win 6-1, 6-2.Henin became the first woman since Monica Seles in 1990-92 to win three consecutive Roland Garros titles, and only the second since 1937.Henin won the French Open for the first time in 2003 and now has six Grand Slam titles, moving ahead of Venus Williams and Martina Hingis. Among active women she trails only Serena Williams, who has won eight.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Woody Austin turned around a miserable year with the perfect round at the right time.Trailing by four strokes at the start of Sunday's play, Austin shot the best closing round on tour this year in winning the Stanford St. Jude Championship by five strokes for his first PGA Tour victory since 2004 and third overall.His 8-under 62 was the best final round of his career and best in the 50 years of this event. It also was the tour's lowest closing round since Brad Faxon's 61 at the 2006 Buick Championship.
HAVRE DE GRACE, Md. — Suzann Pettersen kept saying that her major meltdown 10 weeks ago was a distant memory. For those not listening, all they had to do was watch her Sunday at the LPGA Championship.Pettersen never flinched down the stretch, closing with a 5-under 67 to hold off a spirited challenge by Karrie Webb and a late charge by 18-year-old Na On Min for a one-shot victory and her first major championship.
CARSON, Calif. — The United States advanced to the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup with a 2-0 victory Saturday over Trinidad and Tobago.Brian Ching scored in the first half and Landon Donovan became the U.S. career points leader when he fed Eddie Johnson for a second-half goal.Donovan got his 25th assist to go along with 30 international goals, and with 85 points he moved one ahead of Eric Wynalda for the career lead.
