Forty-eight children with blindness or visual disabilities will get to try their hand at golf and canoeing, two new sports added to the lineup at Slippery Rock University's VIPSports Camp June 19 to 23.
The program also gives children from Western Pennsylvania and Ohio the opportunity to swim, ride a horse, rock climb and try tae kwon do. Campers also play beep baseball with the Slippery Rock Sliders.
There will be 25 students in SRU's Adapted Physical Activity Program who will run the camp and community volunteers will help run the stations. Campers ages 6 to 18 will participate and stay in residence halls on campus.
Additional sports include soccer, track and field and goalball, a sport designed for blind or visually impaired athletes.
After winning competitions in Center Township and Rochester, Caleb Baxter of Butler will participate in the team competition of baseball's Pitch, Hit and Run before Sunday's Pirates game at PNC Park.The top four competitors in the nation will head to the All-Star Game in San Francisco.
