Butler Twp. home destroyed by fire

BUTLER TWP — A Crisswell Road home was severely damaged on Wednesday by fire. Fire officials expect the house will be demolished.

South Butler firefighters were called to 132 Crisswell Road about 11:10 p.m. after a neighbor spotted flames and called 911.

Shawn Gray, the owner and sole occupant, was not home. No one was injured in the fire.

Ron Henshaw, assistant chief, said the 2½-story house was an older wooden one that burned quickly. Also, the stairs leading from the second floor to the third floor burned away.

Because of that firefighters had to battle the flames from the first and second floors and they never reached the third floor.

South Butler and assisting fire departments brought in tankers and portable pool-like tanks to hold water, Henshaw said.

Firefighters from Meridian, Greenwood, Lyndora, Middlesex, Saxonburg, Lick Hill and Herman helped at the scene. The last firefighters didn't leave until 6 this morning.

The cause of the fire is not known. The state police fire marshal is expected to investigate this morning.

Gray, who told firefighters he did not have insurance, is staying with family.

Henshaw estimated the damage at $160,000.
