Callery woman killed in I-79 crash

MARSHALL TWP, Allegheny County — Asuspected drunken driver Wednesday night slammed into the back of a car on Interstate 79, killing a Butler County woman, state police said.

Renee Michelle Parkinson, 26, of Callery, who was thrown out of her car, was pronounced dead at the scene following the 10:17 p.m. crash between the Wexford and Warrendale exits.

Police arrested Matthew Lyle Crowson, 24, of Washington County shortly after the crash but not before he drove off and later ran into woods in a failed attempt to elude troopers.

Crowson was traveling north on I-79 and apparently speeding, police said, when his 2007 Pontiac G-6 rear-ended the northbound 1999 Pontiac Sunfire that Parkinson was driving.

The force of the collision pushed the Sunfire into a hillside on the east side of the highway, where Parkinson, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the car; the Sunfire landed on its roof.

Crowson, instead of stopping, sped away, said Trooper Gregory Brown, the investigating officer. Crowson drove about two miles to a convenience store, stopped and bolted from his car.

"He ran into a wooded area behind the gas station,"Brown said this morning. "He was able to get over an embankment, but there's a 10- to 12-foot drop."

Police quickly nabbed Crowson, who suffered minor injuries in the wreck.

Authorities declined to say how soon charges could be filed.
