Knoch grad nominated to national nuclear post
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The White House has nominated a Knoch High School graduate to the National Nuclear Security Administration.
Maj. Gen. Robert Smolen would be responsible for the nation's nuclear stockpile maintenance, if confirmed by the Senate.
Smolen, who last year was made commander of the Air Force District of Washington, would replace Thomas Paul D'Agostino as deputy administrator for defense programs. He has also served in the National Security Council and worked as director of Nuclear and Counterproliferation in the Air Force.
He graduated from Knoch in 1970 and went to Allegheny College, the University of Oklahoma and Auburn University.
His mother, Gladys Smolen, resides in Cabot.
