Cleora Alice McCandless

Cleora Alice McCandless, 91, of Butler died at 8:12 a.m. Friday at Meadville Medical Center.

Born Jan. 3, 1916, in Butler, she was the daughter of Paul Renick and Dora Hockenberry Renick.

She had been a member of the First English Lutheran Church for 65 years and a former member of the Rider Lutheran Church for 19 years. She was a 1933 Butler High School graduate.

She and her husband had owned and operated Hillvale Dairy Farm in Center Township for 65 years.

She had been on the Butler Memorial Hospital Auxiliary for more than 40 years. She was inducted into the 1998 Pennsylvania Voter Hall of Fame for voting in every general election for more than 50 consecutive years. She had been an avid bridge player and gardener.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Doris J.) Habel of Meadville and Mrs. William (Kay) Houston of White Bear Lake, Minn.; two sons, J. Thomas McCandless of Severna Park, Md., and Paul Richard McCandless Jr. of Winter Park, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, Robert Habel, Cindy (Habel) Schwab, James T. McCandless, Jeffrey C. McCandless, Robert Paul McCandless, Shanen (Houston) Hoke, Brecke (Houston) Plourde, William Houston, Kelly (McCandless) Robertson, and Richard T. McCandless; 13 great- grandchildren, Rockey and Jacob Habel; Cara Jane and Molly Kay Schwab; Claudia, Sarah, Robert James and Matthew S. McCandless; Elliott and Quinn Hoke; and Jacob, Owen and Tessa Patricia Kay Plourde; a sister, Sarah Jane Biehl of Silver Spring, Md.; and a brother, Arthur J. Renick of West Sunbury.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul R. McCandless, whom she married June 6, 1935, and who died Jan. 9, 2001; a daughter, Dorothy Jean McCandless; and four brothers, Homer, Bertram, Horace and Dr. Raymond P. Renick.

<B>MCCANDLESS</B>— Friends of Cleora Alice McCandless, who died Friday, Nov. 16, 2007, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at <B>Young Funeral Home</B>, Butler. Services will be at 11 a.m. Nov. 24 at First English Lutheran Church, 214 N. Main St., with the Rev. James W.
