Police: Butler woman admits 2006 arson

CHICORA — Candice Cozin, 39, of Butler turned herself in to police today in connection with a house fire in 2006.

She turned herself in at the office of District Judge Lewis Stoughton in Chicora. Stoughton arraigned Cozin on charges of arson, causing or risking catastrophe, insurance fraud and criminal mischief — all felonies.

She is free on $5,000 bond.

Wanting to get back at her husband after an all-day argument, Cozin admitted she set fire to the couple's rental home in 2006, state police said.

The single-story house in Summit Township was destroyed in the fire, but neither Candice or Joseph Cozin were hurt. Three firefighters, however, suffered minor injuries.

The May 30, 2006, blaze at 130 McGrady Hollow Road was immediately considered suspicious, authorities said, since it broke out just minutes after troopers were called to the home for a reported domestic dispute.

The house, owned by Marvin Del Cuesta, had $63,242 in damage, police said.

Investigators soon determined the fire was intentionally set in the basement of the house shortly after 8 p.m.

The defendant emerged as a primary suspect, police said, but the case would linger for more than a year.

Part of the reason for the delay was that the initial fire investigator was promoted and transferred, said Trooper Timothy Morando, a deputy fire marshal in Butler, who took over the case in April.

Additionally, he said the Cozins had separated by then and police did not know where they had moved.

Police finally tracked down the defendant, who was interviewed Sept. 14.

"Before the questioning started Cozin backed away from the table,"according to court documents, "and stated, 'I started the fire.'"

Cozin appeared Monday without an attorney. She declined to comment following the proceeding.
