Budget spares VOICe funding

Victim outreach center can house 11 adults, 16 kids

Butler County will continue giving money to the Victim Outreach Intervention Center.

The county commissioners Wednesday approved $15,000 for VOICe.

Elizabeth Clark-Smith, executive director of VOICe, said the money will help maintain the organization's 24-hour crisis intervention services.

She said the VOICe hotline receives 50 calls daily and helps about 170 new victims each month.

The VOICe shelter houses 11 adults and 16 children.

In addition to state and federal funding being reduced to VOICe, foundations also are stepping back, Clark-Smith said.

The organization previously lost $87,000 of its 2008 budget of $1.2 million when a $300,000 federal grant to the county wasn't renewed. The remainder of the grant was budgeted for county district attorney's office.

Commissioner James Kennedy lauded the organization's work.

"Our money is well spent," he said.

Along with nearly 30 other nonprofit organizations, VOICe's county funding was jeopardized for this year.

A proposed county budget initially cut most of the county contributions, which totals $5.4 million. Although a subsequent version of the budget restored that funding, a financial advisory committee recommended the commissioners cut the number of contributions.

Since the final 2008 county budget of $185.3 million with a 2.5-mill property tax hike was approved in February, the commissioners have been reviewing each contribution.

They reviewed the contribution to VOICe and decided to keep it.

The commissioners also have agreed to keep a $4.5 million contribution to Butler County Community College, $10,000 to the Butler County Fire Chiefs Association to help operate the fire training school in Butler Township and $2,500 to the Unionville Volunteer Fire Company to buy diving suits and equipment for its scuba team that helps throughout the county.

The commissioners have yet to approve or deny a $10,000 contribution to the Butler County Historical Society, which made a presentation earlier this month.
