Another battle on the track

Competitors charge down the track in the first heat of the 100-meter dash during Tuesday's meet between Butler and Seneca Valley. The Golden Tornado boys took a 78-71 victory.
Butler boys edge Raiders in closely contested meet

BUTLER TWP — The way the Seneca Valley-Butler track and field meets have turned out the past few years, no one was surprised the meet came down to the wire again.

That was the case in the boys meet, which saw the Butler 1,600-meter relay hold off the Raiders, then saw sophomore Logan Renwick leap 45 feet, 9 inches in the triple jump to come away with a 78-71 victory.

In the girls meet, it was a surprise that the Raiders won all 11 track events and all three jumping events en route to a 102-48 victory.

"It's come down to the final event in boys and girls the past few years," said Seneca Valley coach Ray Peaco. "It's gone back and forth, but it's a fun, competitive rivalry.

"You had people lined up 10 deep for the (1,600 relay), then moving over to the triple jump. And you had two kids clear 45 feet. That's state-meet jumping in April," Peaco added.

SV's Conor Barrett hit 45 feet before Renwick had an attempt of 45-1, then followed it up with his 45-9.

"I always score the meet and do it conservatively," said Butler boys coach Rick Schontz. "I had us a little behind in the track events and us a little ahead in the field, and that's what happened.

"Every point counted. Every second and third place mattered. And, in every event, no one dominated. Seneca Valley has a great team,"Schontz added.

Butler did win six of the seven field events — Barrett's 6-2 in the high jump edged Renwick's 6-0 — and took four of the first six track events.

"We won the shot put (Dylan O'Donnell), discus (Matt Cooper and Javelin (Mike Schontz), and we knew we had to do that to win the meet," said Schontz.

However, the Raiders made things interesting on the track as Jon Boyd won the 300 hurdles, Cam Stauffer the 800, Frank Campisino the 200 and Chris Cipro the 3,200 to help set the stage for the final two events.

"I give a lot of credit to the Butler kids," said Peaco. "They had us down quite a few points, but the kids brought it back."

Along with Renwick, who also won the 110 hurdles, Mason McLaughlin played a key role in the Tornado's win as he won the 100 (11.0), was second in the 200 and anchored the 400 relay and the pivotal 1,600 relay.

In the girls meet, four different Raiders won two individual events each. Three of them also took part in a winning relay — Angelika Delerme (100, long jump, 400 relay), Megan Powell (1,600, 3,200, 3,200 relay), Erin Lopresti (400 and 800, 3,200 relay) and Jen Boyd (high and triple jumps).

"I don't like to single any one girl out. It was a team thing," said Peaco. "I saw them pick each other up. We scored a lot of points on the track (73 out of a possible 87)."

Katherine Sylvia shined for Butler, winning the shot put and discus while Marina Gracik (javelin) and Skye Sankey (pole vault) won the Tornado's other events.

In Sylvia's events, Butler swept the shot put and took second in the discus as well.

"I can't say enough about Katherine Sylvia's leadership," said Butler coach Rod Harris. "She stepped up and won the shot put and discus and rallied the girls over there."

Butler was missing senior middle distance runner Amanda Malecky, who suffered a calf injury last week.

With a young team — and a banged-up one as well — Harris is hopeful the Tornado can be ready when it matters most.

"Overall, I was disappointed with losing, but we had some PR's and a lot of good things happened. We'll talk about it in our meeting and go from there and see how things pan out."

Butler's boys and Seneca Valley's girls teams improved to 3-0; the Tornado girls and Raiders boys fell to 2-1. Butler will host Shaler on Thursday while Seneca Valley will compete at Hampton Thursday.
