Georgia gets rest from CWS action

OMAHA, Neb. — Georgia is going to have lots of time to kill before it plays another game at the College World Series.

The Bulldogs' reward for defeating Stanford 4-3 in Bracket 1 on Monday night is three days of rest as a result of a new tournament format.

Georgia (43-23-1) plays Friday against the winner of Wednesday's Miami-Stanford game. A win would send the Bulldogs to the best-of-three championship series beginning next Monday.

"It's interesting from the standpoint of who you throw Friday," coach David Perno said.

Perno could start Nathan Moreau, his No. 3 pitcher. Or he could start staff ace Trevor Holder, who received a no-decision after working four innings against Miami in the Bulldogs' CWS opener.

"If you go to our No. 3 and if you're forced to play another game and wait to throw Trevor on Saturday, he can't come back if you're fortunate enough to be in the national championship," Perno said. "So it looks like you go with your No. 1 on Friday and try to seal it up so at least if you get into the national championship series, you can bring him back."

Two days' rest awaits the winner of Tuesday night's matchup between surprising Fresno State (43-29) and North Carolina (52-12). In the afternoon, Rice (47-14) and LSU (48-18-1) play an elimination game.

The first team to go home was Florida State, which lost 7-5 to top-seeded Miami on Monday.

The CWS is stretched at least one extra day this year after the NCAA agreed to push back the start of the finals from a Saturday to a Monday. The change was made to accommodate ESPN, which says its CWS ratings are stronger on weekdays.

The new format also helps teams trying to bounce back from a loss. In 2003, the Cardinal lost to Cal State Fullerton, then won three elimination games in three days.
