Mary E. Rose, ex-Barkeyville mayor

Mary E. Rose, 83, of Barkeyville died at 8:55 a.m. Wednesday at her home.

Born April 29, 1925, in Wesley, Venango County, she was the daughter of Charles A. Riddle and Edna M. Cokain Riddle.

She was a 1942 graduate of Wesley High School and attended Slippery Rock University.

She was a self-employed notary since 1966. She was a former Barkeyville Borough Council member and was the first female council member. She was the first female mayor of Barkeyville and held the position for more than 12 years, resigning in February 2008 for health reasons. She also was a former justice of the peace of Barkeyville.

She formerly worked at the T/A Truck Stop of Barkeyville for 18 years.

She was a member of the Barkeyville United Methodist Church. She was the treasurer of the church for more than 30 years, a former Sunday school teacher, a former member and past master of Wesley Grange and Pomona Grange, and a member of the Clintonville Fire Department board of directors. She enjoyed sewing and gardening.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow O. Rose, who she married Aug. 7, 1946, and who died May 2, 1998.

She is survived by two daughters, Linda M. Price and her husband, Jack. E., of Fayetteville, Ga., and Gladys C. Hoffman and her husband, Gary V., of Harrisville; two sons, Wayne E. Rose and his wife, Meg, of Erie and Douglas W. Rose and his wife, Chris of Fairfax, Va.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandsons.

She is also survived by a sister, Charlene McCullough and her husband, Irwin, of Hermitage, Pa.; and two brothers, C. Leslie Riddle of Grove City and James C. Riddle of Harrisville.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded by her parents and two brothers.

Memorial contributions may be made to an organization of the donor's choice.

<B>ROSE — </B>Friends of Mary E. Rose, who died Wednesday, June 4, 2008, will be received 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the <B>JAMISON FUNERAL HOME</B>, 117 N. Main St., Harrisville.A service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. The Rev. Jack D. Patterson, retired Methodist minister, and the Rev. Stephanie D. Thompson of the Barkeyville United Methodist Church will officiate.
