Leroy B. Andre, 86, of Chicora died Sunday at Butler Memorial Hospital.

Born May 18, 1922, in Fairview Township, he was the son of the late Earl and Carrie (Lewis) Andre.

He was a graduate of the Fairview Township Karns City High School and The Butler Business College.

During World War II, he served as a technician, fifth grade, in the 101st Calvary Reconnaissance Squadron Mechanized in the European theater.

He was employed by the Butler Eagle for 43 years, was a correspondent for the Progress News and the Leader Times for 20 years, as well as for the Leader-Vindicator and KDKA. He was a justice of the peace for Donegal Township for 18 years and previously owned the Town and Country Cleaners in Chicora.

Mr. Andre was a lifelong member of St. John's Reformed Church, Chicora, where he served as an elder, deacon and Sunday school superintendent. He was a life member and past commander of the Dexter Leroy Donaldson VFW Post and was a member the Dierken Ritzert American Legion Post, Argyle Lodge F&AM, the Chicora Volunteer Fire Department and the Butler Eagle Retirees. He also chaired the reunion committee of the Pennsylvania 101st Mechanized Calvary.

He received the Legionnaire of the Year award in 1983, the Progress News Top 10 People of the Year award in 1997, the Kaylor Grange Community Service Award in 1996 and was the Annual Photography Contest and Exhibit featured photographer in 1996.

He was active in local baseball leagues, including the Chicora Church League, and coached and managed Little League and American Legion baseball teams. He was a member of the Butler Sports Hall of Fame Committee, won first place in his age group in the Butler Road Race four times and was involved in Special Olympics.

He also was active in community projects and chaired the Chicora Honor Roll Memorial Committee and the committee for the Bradys Bend Flood Memorial Picnic Center.He married Jeannette Bouch of Worthington on Aug. 5, 1944. She survives along with a daughter, Larilyn Andre of Centreville, Va.; a son, Thomas Andre (Fay) of Penn Hills; grandchildren, Kyle A. Reimauer (Tracy) of Woodbridge, Va., Nathaniel Andre-Erwin of Centerville, Rachel Andrew of Catonsville, Md., and Nathan, Joshua and Christopher Andre, all of Penn Hills; a great-grandchild, Delaney Paige Reimauer of Woodbridge; and step-great-grandchildren, Kelsie and Hannah Bolling of Woodbridge. He also is survived by three brothers, Leslie Andre of Slippery Rock, Gerald Andre of Chicora and Harold "Dutch" Andre (Saunie) of Butler; a brother-in-law, Dwight Bouch of Kittanning; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews on three continents.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Donald Andre of Alexandria, Va., and Cecil Andre of Johnson City, Tenn.; and sisters, Mrs. Virginia "Betty" Weimer of Chicora and Mrs. Shirley Stitt of Vandergrift.

Andre, who died Sunday, July 13, 2008, will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the <B>STEIGHNER FUNERAL HOME</B>, 111 E. Slippery Rock St., Chicora. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. John's Church, 334 W. Slippery Rock St., Chicora, with the Rev.Richard Rowe and the Rev. John Pistorius officiating. Burial will follow at the church at the St. John's Church Cemetery.Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the Chicora VFW and American Legion posts and the 99th Regional Readiness Command of Coraopolis.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
