Don't let insects bug you and your guests
Discourage bugs from crashing your outdoor party with these tips from Terminix:
• Ants: Immediately clean drink and food spills. Take dirty plates and utensils indoors after eating, and immediately discard disposable cups and plates. Sweep entertainment areas and wipe down tables after eating to remove food particles.
• Yellow jackets: Keep fruits covered. Serve juices in pitchers with sealed lids. Because yellow jackets can crawl into open cans, pour all beverages into cups. Dispose of trash in containers with sealing lids.
• Flies: Use fans to create a light breeze across a table. Serve food in containers with lids. Locate trash receptacles as far from you and your guests as possible, and line trash cans to reduce the odors that attract flies.
• Mosquitos: Eliminate breeding grounds by emptying birdbaths and children's pools at least once a week, keeping gutters clean and removing pots or other items that collect water.
• General tips: Don't use scented candles outdoors. They might attract flying insects that mistake the scent for fruit or flowers. And because many flying insects are attracted to light, consider lighting eating, cooking and social areas from a distance.
