Ice Cream Race still popular after 100 years
A Wednesday evening race is unusual —— even more unusual if that race is in its 100th running.
Mercer County QUAD celebrated its 100th event with Courtney's Ice Cream Race 5K Aug. 13 at 7 p.m. The QUAD series, including Strawberry Days 5K in Grove City, Chase at the Lake in Mercer in June and Fredonia 5K in July, has been a Mercer County tradition for 25 years.
The popular series celebrated this milestone with a record 110 gallons of ice cream consumed by 712 5K finishers and 126 kids. Kids 11 and under participated in a separate half mile run following the longer event.
Marathon legend Bill Rodgers was on hand to witness the occasion and to run with his friend and race director, Mark Courtney. Rodgers, age 60, won his age group with a finishing time of 21:39.
Rodgers, now a Boston businessman, has been inducted into both the National Track and Field Hall of Fame and National Distance Running Hall of Fame. During the 1970s, Rodgers won both the Boston and New York City Marathons four times each. Two of his Boston performances, including his personal best 2:09:27, set American marathon records. Rodgers also competed in the 1976 Olympic Marathon.
Despite his achievements and celebrity, Rodgers remains a gentle, unassuming man. He warmed up with the throngs on Cranberry Road, served as starter for the race, signed autographs following the event and posed for photos with age group winners long into the evening. Rodgers was genuinely interested in each person's run and delighted in speaking with a group of younger runners gathered around him after the awards ceremony.
Courtney's Ice Cream Race 5K is run on an almost flat out and back course just north of Grove City. The run starts and finishes at Grove City Medical Center and passes by Mark Courtney's home, where the post race all-you-can-eat ice cream buffet is held.
The level course combined with relatively cool temperatures to produce some fast finishing times. Kevin Pool won the men's race in 15:18 while Samantha Howard won the women's division with a finishing time of 18:18. Margretta Lutz broke her own two-week old American record for 79 year olds with a 29:22 finish.
In the kids' race, 11-year old Steven Biddle finished first with a time of 2:58 while Jordon Bon won the girls division with a time of 3:05 for the out and back half mile.
Each finisher at the Ice Cream Race 5K and kids' run earned finishers' ribbons and commemorative ice cream spoons to dig in to their choice of flavors and toppings at the post race buffet. Overall winners took home autographed Bill Rodgers posters while age group winners took home ice cream themed items such as bowls, sauces and scoops.
Those who competed in all four 2008 QUAD races were rewarded with commemorative towels. Top QUAD series finishers Kenneth Foster, fourth place at Ice Cream Race, and Christie Turak, second woman at Ice Cream Race, earned autographed books by Bill Rodgers.
Mark Courtney, who has run every one of the QUAD events, presented the two other 100-race finishers with $100 gasoline gift cards.
