Records snap just like twigs
Record-setting.
That best describes the Seneca Valley football team's offense so far in 2008.
Consider:
• Senior quarterback C.J. Brown threw for a school record 303 yards in a Week 1 loss at Norwin.
Last Thursday, he passed for 304 yards in a thrilling 38-33 win over visiting Erie McDowell.
Brown also has rushed for four touchdowns in two games.
• Senior wideout Matt Plautz has caught 18 passes in two games. He could break his own school record for catches in a single season of 51, which he set in 2007.
• Last year, Plautz was the only Raiders receiver to grab at least 17 throws.
Just two games into this season, Plautz, Evan Hetzel and Pete Vicente all are in double figures in receptions.
But for all the numbers the team has put up, head coach Ron Butschle is confident his players' priorities are in line with his own.
"I'm sure kids are going to be aware of their stats," said Butschle. "But none of our players are more concerned with that than winning football games.
"It's not even something I have to say to them," he added. "Once Monday rolls around, last week is over."
This week, the Raiders are focused on host Baldwin (0-2) of the WPIAL's Great Southern Conference.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday
The Highlanders are coming off a 56-6 loss to Gateway. They lost to Shaler 19-6 in their opener Aug. 29.
SV traveled to Baldwin last year and gave up 592 rushing yards in a 63-28 loss.
While quarterback Jeff Joyce, who ran for 333 yards on 10 carries in the 2007 game, was lost to graduation, the Highlanders still will force the Raiders to stop the triple option.
Junior fullback Quinn Hood is a threat after rushing for more than 500 yards and scoring four touchdowns in 2007.
"Last year, we gave up 63 points to them, so I'd run (the triple option) again against us," said Butschle. "They're not strictly a triple-option team anymore, but we'll see it at some point."
McDowell ran the triple option last week and, despite losing to the Raiders, did have success, including touchdown runs of 72 and 71 yards in the first quarter.
"That first one we gave up was just a toss play," said Butschle. "We practiced all week against the option and they come out on the first play and run a toss. It kind of caught us off-guard.
"We gave up a touchdown to Norwin on their first drive and did the same thing against McDowell," added Butschle. "I think a big key for us is to have a good first series on defense."
Shouldering much of the responsibility in the Raiders' 4-4 defense will be inside linebackers Luke Mueller and Andrew Smith, and Cam Marburger and Pat Kulp on the outside.
