Olen

John A. Olen, 89, of Butler died Wednesday at the Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born July 28, 1919, in Lyndora, he was a son of the late Alex and Anna Martinyak Olen.

He had worked in the silicon department at the Armco Steel plant in Butler for 34 years until his retirement in 1979.

John served in the Civilian Conservation Corps, CCC, in Arizona from 1939 until 1941 when he enlisted in the Marines. He saw action in World War II in the Pacific Theatre, including the battle of Guadalcanal.

He was a member of the Bantam Marine Club 743, the VFW Post 249 in Butler and the American Legion Post 778 in Lyndora. He was a life member of the Lyndora Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Old Bessemer Club.

John enjoyed all sports including hunting, fishing, baseball, football and thoroughbred horse racing. Following his retirement, he and his wife enjoyed traveling and taking bus tours throughout the United States and Canada.

He was a member of the Grace @ Calvary Lutheran Church in Butler, where he served as an usher.

Surviving is his wife, Betty A. Billow Olen, who he married Aug. 17, 1959. Also surviving are a son, Michael J. Olen of Butler; a daughter, Melanie Olen of Butler; a grandson, Michael R. Olen of Butler; a granddaughter, Lisa M. Olen of Butler; a brother, Charles Olen of Prospect; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Amanda Olen; four brothers; and two sisters.

<B>Olen — </B>Friends of John A. Olen, who died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the <B>Geibel Funeral Home</B>, 201 E. Cunningham St. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The Rev. Timothy L. Bupp, his church pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Chapel of Devotion Mausoleum at Butler County Memorial Park.Memorial donations may be made to Grace @ Calvary Lutheran Church, 123 E.
