Jury trial near in tot's death
Attorneys appear on track to hold a jury trial next month for a woman accused of killing her newborn, two years after the baby's dead body was found under a bed.
Lauren Jones, 26, and her lawyer Joseph Kecskemethy appeared in Butler County Court Monday to review evidence questions with Assistant District Attorney B.T. Fullerton.
Jones, facing a murder charge, is scheduled for a jury trial before Butler County Judge Timothy McCune beginning March 23. Jury selection is set to start March 12.
The district attorney's office is no longer seeking the death penalty, but Jones could face life in prison if convicted of first-degree murder.
Prosecutors believe Jones hid her pregnancy from friends and family members. And, unbeknownst to her parents, she gave birth to a full-term baby girl in the cellar of the small house on Monroe Road Feb. 28, 2007.
Jones later would tell investigators the umbilical cord had wrapped around the newborn's neck, and the baby had no pulse or heartbeat.
Jones reportedly told investigators she stabbed the baby once with a steak knife "to make sure the baby didn't suffer."
But autopsy reports allegedly show the baby sustained three stab wounds to the neck before being placed, still alive, in a trash bag and then again in a book bag under her bed.
Fullerton on Monday told the judge that among the experts he hopes to present to a jury is a obstetrician/gynecologist to describe the effects a woman's body undergoes during a pregnancy.
On the other hand, Fullerton said prosecutors plan to present no experts in the field of psychiatry as the defense has not filed notice that it plans to present a defense related to mental illness.
Jones, who made no statements in court Monday, remains in the Butler County Prison without bail.
