SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Syracuse's best defensive player will undergo chest surgery after a freak injury in the weight room.

Syracuse says defensive tackle Arthur Jones sustained a torn left pectoralis muscle while lifting weights on Feb. 23. An MRI confirmed the tear, and surgery is scheduled for next week.

The Endicott native was a 2008 All-Big East first team selection last season as a junior. He ranks sixth on the Orange career record list for tackles for loss. Last season, Jones recorded 60 tackles, including 13 for a loss of yards.

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Dodgers made a fourth bid for Manny Ramirez, this time offering the enigmatic slugger a $25 million, one-year contract with a $20 million player option for 2010.The player option came at the request of Ramirez's agent, Scott Boras.The latest proposal is similar in dollars to Los Angeles' first offer to the free-agent left fielder this offseason, a $45 million, two-year deal.

NEW YORK — NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is taking a pay cut and the league staff has been trimmed by 15 percent because of the reeling economy, the NFL confirmed.The league said that its staff cut, announced more than two months ago, has resulted in a reduction of 169 jobs through buyouts, layoffs and other staff reductions. That amounts to just over 15 percent of the league's work force of 1,100.

CALGARY, Alberta — Michael Phelps has been dropped as the keynote speaker at two events in Canada next week, with the promoter citing the Olympic champion swimmer's "widely publicized alleged use of marijuana."
