TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida State might have to forfeit some of coach Bobby Bowden's 382 wins and will be on probation for the next four years as part of its punishment for a widespread academic cheating scandal.The Seminoles must give up two scholarships this recruiting season and one the following year. Other sports will lose scholarships and have victories — including three NCAA national championships in track and field — threatened.The NCAA said Friday 61 Florida State athletes cheated on an online test from the fall of 2006 through summer 2007 or received improper help from staffers who provided them with answers to the exam and typed papers for them.The NCAA said the school must vacate all wins in contests in which athletes involved in the cheating participated. That could involve up to 14 football victories.
HONOLULU — The Pro Bowl is returning to Hawaii.The Hawaii Tourism Authority board voted 9-1 Friday to accept the NFL's offer to return to the islands.The board rejected two previous proposals, but under mounting pressure reconsidered its latest refusal to pay the NFL $4 million a year to host the all-star game at Aloha Stadium in 2011 and 2012.The 2010 Pro Bowl will be played in Miami a week before the Super Bowl after a 30-year run in Hawaii in which every game was a sellout.
IRVING, Texas — Terrell Owens' agent predicts the well-traveled receiver will find a new team by the end of next week.Owens is back on the market after being released by the Dallas Cowboys.Owens is among the NFL's career leaders in catches, yards and touchdowns. But the Cowboys are the third team to get rid of him because of his divisiveness. Dallas cut him Thursday after three seasons.
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Former Detroit Pistons coach Chuck Daly has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.The team said Friday that Daly "is being treated for the cancer and his family is requesting privacy."
