WAYNESBURG — The man who retired after 33 seasons as a television and radio broadcaster for the Pittsburgh Pirates has been hired as a communications professor by nearby Waynesburg University.
The university announced Wednesday it was hiring Lanny Frattare to teach sportscasting, news announcing and public speaking courses. He will help student sportscasters and work with the university relations office on radio advertising and sport information concerns.
The Pirates announced in October that Frattare was retiring.
The team hired Tim Neverett to replace Frattare.
Frattare's 33-year tenure was the longest of any Pirates announcer since the team began broadcasting its games in 1921.
NEW CASTLE — A Western Pennsylvania high school baseball player is in a Pittsburgh hospital after hitting his head on an outfield fence support as he dove for a fly ball during a scrimmage.Neshannock High School junior Joey Fontana was flown to Allegheny General Hospital after he was hurt about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. The accident happened in New Castle, about 45 miles northwest of Pittsburgh.Hospital officials have not released information on Fontana's condition.But the 17-year-old player's family has told reporters that his condition has improved since he was brought to the hospital.
PARIS — Lance Armstrong has undergone hundreds of urine and blood tests throughout his cycling career. This time, he was in for a surprise — a hair sample test.Armstrong and French anti-doping agency AFLD said that he was approached for a hair sample in an unannounced test Tuesday in Beaulieu-sur-Mer in southern France, where he is training as part of his comeback for a shot at an eighth Tour de France title.Armstrong said it was the 24th anti-doping test he's faced since he announced his return in September, and the first time he's ever been asked to provide a sample of hair.
