EC water checks out safe in study
EVANS CITY — The borough's public works director reassured residents at a Monday night council meeting their water is safe to drink.
Resident Judy Forman last month told council an independent test she had done on her water concluded it had more than three times the recommended levels of contaminants for safe consumption.
Forman said ice cubes in her freezer had a red tint and her toilet water consistently left black residue.
But Norm Nelson, public works director, debunked her claims after conducting his own tests. He said the levels of iron and magnesium in her water don't pose a health threat and questioned the validity of the independent study.
He also was concerned that she bought a $4,600 water purification system at the advice of the company.
Forman said she noticed a change in the clarity of her water after installing the purification system. Forman said she'll consult another company to make sure her water is safe.
Concerning other water matters, Nelson reminded residents he plans to flush fire hydrants on Monday and May 12.
In other action, the council decided to write a letter to the athletic association regarding traffic on Railroad Street for the baseball fields and nearby EDCO Park.
Police Chief Joe McCombs suggested the letter stating the police department's intent to monitor traffic on the street, especially when the nearby ball fields are in use.
Council had considered lowering the speed limit on Railroad Street.
