M. Reed Thompson

M. Reed Thompson, 94, of Grove Manor, formerly of Barkeyville, passed away Sunday.

Born April 1, 1915, in Cherry Township, he was the son of Melvin A. Thompson and Lydia Kerr Thompson.

He graduated from Plain Grove High School in 1932.

He married Sara E. Duffy on Aug. 31, 1941, and she passed away in May 1968.

Mr. Thompson retired from Greenville Steel Car as a welder. He also had worked at Pittsburgh Limestone in Boyers and in many strip mines as a welder. He also operated the Thompson Store and ESSO station in Barkeyville for 17 years.

He was the oldest Barkeyville resident and was a member of the Barkeyville Church of God.

A veteran of World War II, he was in the Army from 1941 to 1945, was an member of the 29th Division and active participant in the invasion of Omaha Beach and Normandy. He received a Purple Heart for injuries he incurred.

He was a member of the first Barkeyville Borough Council and served as president and as a council member. He also belonged to the NRA, the Harrisville American Legion, the 29th Division Purple Heart Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Surviving are his two daughters, Brenda Surrena and her husband, Guy, of Barkeyville and Becky Cratty of Barkeyville; a nephew, Fred Duffy and his wife, Judy, of Barkeyville; a sister, Alta Kamerer of New Castle; four grandchildren, Shanan Holtz and her husband, Frank, of Bloomington, Ill., Todd Surrena and his wife, Michelle, of Kent, Ohio, Aaron Cratty and his wife, Stacie, of Parrish Fla., and Amber Cratty of Taylorsville, N.C.; and four great-grandchildren, Claudia and Reed Surrena and Olsen and Ensey Cratty.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Eli and Allison Thompson; two sisters, Lois and Edna Thompson; and his son-in-law, Jim Cratty, who died in November 2002.

<B>THOMPSON </B> There will be no visitation. Funeral services for M. Reed Thompson, who died Sunday, April 12, 2009, took place at 2 p.m. today the Clintonville Methodist Cemetery with the Rev. Rob Guy of the Barkeyville Church of God officiating.The <B>Larry E.
